The Dev Den is presented by Jason Daniels, a published Commodore 64 games developer who worked within the industry from 1985 to 1992, he is our 'living exhibit'.
In The Dev Den, Jason has his original software development kit (a PDS system) set-up and running to demonstrate to visitors how games were created back in the 80s and 90s. Jason is also creating new games on this dev kit for popular home computers like the Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC.
Jason is happy to chat with visitors about retro gaming and coding, and to talk about his own history and experiences as a games designer and coder, as well as the new projects he is working on.
In addition to Jason's Development system, The Dev Den features an impressive display of dev kits for various well known games consoles from SONY, Nintendo, SEGA and others. Jason can talk to visitors about how these various systems were used. There are also some fun displays, like the actual boombox used to record the voices for the popular game Worms.
Another part of The Dev Den is the 'Music Corner', a tribute to digital music production technology that boomed in the 1980s. This interactive display has a 1980s digital synthesizer connected to a period computer running music production software - all set up so that visitors can try and create their own 1980s pop song!
The Dev Den even has it's own distinctive 1970s/1980s 'Retrofuturism' style distinguishing it from the look of the rest of The Cave, why not come and check it out!
